How To Choose A Landscape Designer

There are many reasons behind hiring a landscape designer. Maybe you want to overhaul your existing flowerbeds and start from scratch. Or you want to add some additional plants, but aren’t sure where to begin. A lack of time can be a factor as well – gardening can be a time-consuming task, even you’re just choosing and planting flowers. No matter the reason, there are some things to look for when choosing a landscape designer.

Experience and Education

One of the most important questions to ask is about how much experience the landscape design company has. Also, you need to include a few regarding the education of the designers. This can range from a college degree in architectural landscape design to a certificate in horticulture. With that said, experience and a clear vision are what really matter here. You need to find a landscape designer to who can come up with and execute a plan for your yard.

Liability Insurance, Licensing, and Bonding

Every landscaping company needs to have the right kind of insurance, just in case something goes wrong. You’re probably thinking “It’s gardening! What’s the worst that can happen?” Well, you’d be surprised. Rocks can accidentally go through windows (thanks to lawn mowers), underground pipes can break while a tiller digs up your yard, and so on. Insurance is for all of those little contingencies. In Ohio, a landscape architect (or a landscape architect firm – there are two types listed) needs to be properly licensed by the state. If they don’t have this license, then they are operating illegally. You need to ask your potential landscape design company to ensure that they meet this requirement.

Specific Gardening Practices

And then there are specific gardening practices. This is a catch-all phrase that encompasses the things that truly matter to you. Do you want a company that handles all organic gardening? What about one that practices water conservation? Will they choose local, native plants or find ones that will work well in your yard, but actually come from other climates? There are many other gardening practices to ask about as well depending on your specific needs.

Last, but far from least, the cost is another concern when it comes to choosing a landscape designer. Will they be able to stay within your budget? If you have a specific amount set aside for this purpose, you need to make sure that the company you choose can work within your boundaries.
